Keeping track of the restaurants that have closed in London

Here at Hot Dinners we mainly focus on the hottest restaurants in town, as well as new openings. But the London restaurant scene is ever-changing and that means some restaurants fall to the wayside. With that in mind, we're keeping track of the notable restaurants that London has lost over the past few years.

 

April 2024

Turnips (Borough Market) - Seasonal dining from Tomas Lidakevicius (closes 25 April)

Galvin at Windows (Mayfair) - High-rise dining from the Galvin brothers (closes 25 April)

Mere (Fitzrovia) - Monia Galetti's restaurant

Park Row (Soho) - The huge subterranean DC Comics-inspired restaurant

Harvest (Kensal Rise)- Jesse Dunford-Wood's British produce-led restaurant

 

March 2024

Grassfed (Camden) - Paul Foster's beef-focused restaurant

Delhi Grill (Islington) - Indian street food canteen.

The Chelsea Pig - Gastropub just off the King's Road

 

February 2024

Hicce Hart (Islington) - From chef Pip Lacey, both the pub and pizza restaurant have shut

Fat Badger (Richmond) - the riverside restaurant from the Gladwin Brothers

Plu (St John's Wood) - Stirling Elliot Moss' fine fining restaurant 

Prairie Fire (White City) - Barbecue restaurant, last day 11 February

The Vurger Co (Shoreditch) - Vegan burgers

 

January 2024

Bossa (Marylebone) - Brazilian restaurant

Le Gavroche (Mayfair) - The classic Roux restaurant shuts the doors for good.

Buvette (Notting Hill) - American import that opened under the radar and closed in just the same fashion. 

Maene (Shoreditch) - Rooftop place from the Townsend team

Frenchie (Covent Garden) - Greg Marchand's restaurants remain open in Paris, though.

Copper and Ink - MasterChef finalist Tony Rodd's restaurant

Mr White's - Marco Pierre White on Leicester Square

Romulo Cafe - Filipino restaurant in Knightsbridge (Kasa and Kin remains open)

E&O (Notting Hill) - Pan Asian restaurant from Ricker Restaurants

 

December 2023

Saltie Girl (Mayfair) - American seafood import

Hicce (King's Cross) - Although Hicce Hart and Little Pizza Hicce remain open

Marcus (Knightsbridge) - Marcus Wareing's signature restaurant at The Berkeley

Birch (Selsdon and Cheshunt) - The two boutique hotels are up for sale

Hackney Coterie (Hackney) - Wine-focused restaurant in Hackney Downs

 

September 2023

Native at Browns (Mayfair) - The restaurant with the hidden courtyard has closed in Browns but is looking for a new permanent home in 2024

Banners (Crouch End) - After 30 years, the world food restaurant where Bob Dylan once ate is closing the doors.

The India Club (Temple) - One of London's oldest Indian restaurants has been forced to close by developers. 

Jinjuu (Soho) - Korean restaurant originally launched by Judy Joo

 

August 2023

Aquavit (St James) - The Nordic restaurant was one of the first restaurants in St. James's Market

Larry's (Peckham) - Sibling restaurant to Levan

 

July 2023

Plateau (Canary Wharf) - Once one of the most popular restaurants in the area, the D&D restaurant boasted great views in Canary Wharf

Oxeye (Nine Elms) - Sven-Hanson Britt's excellent tasting menu restaurant. 

 

June 2023

Amethyst (Mayfair) - Following the departure of chef Carlo Scotto, the unique tasting menu restaurant shut too.  

 

April 2023

Fenn (Fulham) - The restaurant serving British seasonal dishes (but the same team has opened Counter 71 in Shoreditch)

Spice Box (Walthamstow) - Vegan Indian restaurant closes its last site.

 

March 2023

Bright (London Fields) and P Franco (Clapton) - The Influential restaurant and wine bar (along with Noble Fine Liquor) closed. P Franco has since reopened under the name 107.

M Restaurant (Victoria) and Gaucho (Smithfield) - Martin Williams has shut two of his steak restaurants. 

 

February 2023

Look Mum No Hands (Old Street) - The cycle cafe shut after 13 years

Bermondsey Larder - What was once The Dairy in all but name

 

January 2023

Oklava (Shoreditch) - Selin Kiazim's Turkish/Cypriot restaurant.

Radici (Islington) and Avenue (St James) - These are two of four closures announced by the D&D group across the UK.

The Tapas Room - The mini Spanish chain of restaurants closed the Peckham and Deptford branches

Paradise Cove (previously Sugarcane) - Jamaican restaurant in Wandsworth that got a rave review from Jay Rayner.

Joanna's (Crystal Palace) - Longstanding restaurant closes in its 45th year.

Julie's (Holland Park) - Not long after a renovation, the once celeb haunt closed after 53 years

Pizza East (Notting Hill) - The Shoreditch restaurant was saved by Gordon Ramsay, but this outpost closed

 

December 2022

BAO Fitzrovia - One of the outposts of the Taiwanese restaurant has shut their doors

 

November 2022

Flor Bakery - They closed the original restaurant back in January, and this saw the bakery closing its doors too. 

Simpsons Tavern - It's been in the City for 265 years but landlords forced the closure of this chophouse. A legal battle continues to try and keep it open. 

Wander - The Modern Australian restaurant in Stoke Newington closed as the owner returned to Australia 

33 Abbeville Road - Cocktails bar and restaurant in Clapham

The Chateau - The old-school restaurant closed after being open for 44 years

 

October 2022

Chishuru - The Brixton original closed, but only because Adejoké Bakare is looking for a new home, due to open in 2023.

Jen Cafe - an iconic Chinatown cafe closed.  

Lighthaus Cafe - The Leyton cafe in a former warehouse was forced to shut

Homeslice - The pizza chain closed restaurants in Shoreditch and Fitzrovia

 

September 2022

The Laughing Heart - Hackney wine bar and bistro, particularly popular with chefs and hospitality folk

The Glasshouse - The Kew restaurant from the team behind Chez Bruce, and a Michelin-starred restaurant.

Taco Queen - Mexican restaurant in Peckham

 

August 2022

Sake No Hana - Longstanding Japanese restaurant

Benihana - After 27 years, the famed teppanyaki restaurant shut the doors in Piccadilly (but they're looking to open in Covent Garden)

Tredwells - Chantelle Nicholson's Covent Garden restaurant closes (although she's opening a restaurant in Mayfair)

Adam Handling Chelsea - The Adam Handling restaurant at The Cadogan closes (replaced later by The LaLee)

Bar Boulud - Daniel Boulud's restaurant at The Mandarin Oriental closes (with a new restaurant to take its place)

Dandy - The latest version of the aussie-inspired restaurant is another pandemic victim. 

Terroirs - The Covent Garden natural wine haven closed its doors after nearly a decade

Joy in Portobello - Stevie Parle's pop-up was a huge success but could not get the approval to become permanent

 

May 2021

The Gilbert Scott - Marcus Wareing's St Pancras restaurant did not return post-pandemic as he let the lease expire.

 

April 2021

Harry Morgan - iconic St John's Wood deli closes its doors.

Geales - Serving Notting Hill with fish and chips for decades, the restaurant is finally bowing out. 

Blixen - The Spitalfields restaurant with the impressive terrace garden is to be replaced by an Irish chicken and burger restaurant

Zelman Meats (Soho) - The original will not reopen after lockdown but they continue at Harvey Nichols in Knightsbridge

 

February 2021

Halal Guys (Leicester Square) - intended to be the flagship restaurant, this has now shut but they continue at Earl's Court. 

 

December 2020

The Modern Pantry - one of Clerkenwell's most popular, closed when its lease ran out. 

Xier - the restaurant of two halves by Carlo Scotto didn't reopen after shutting for the lockdown. 

Roganic - this makes it the second time that Simon Rogan's restaurant has closed in London

Roux at Parliament Square - The well respected Michel Roux Jr restaurant has shut.

Street XO - no more dumplings splatters with sauce as David Muñoz London outpost closes.

 

November 2020

The Patate - French burgers in Kentish Town, hopefully popping up again in another form.

Two Lights - The American bistro from Chase Lovecky and the Clove Club team has shut for good. 

Bong Bong's Manila Kanteen - the excellent Filipino restaurant in Hackney has closed, but they have plans to return soon

MEATliquor has closed its King's Cross restaurant (but might be following it with something new)

Tracks & Records - Usain Bolt's restaurant in the City

 

September

Kym's - Andrew Wong's City restaurant will not reopen (but A Wong in Victoria continues)

Ace Hotel - the Shoreditch hotel (including restaurant Hoi Polloi) did not reopen after the first lockdown and is staying shut

Tibits - primarily buffet style, this vegetarian restaurant closed both its locations. 

Rochelle Canteen at the ICA - the spin-off of the original

 

August 2020

Vanilla Black - pioneering vegetarian restaurant. Hoping to return in another form later. 

Piebury Corner has closed both its Holloway Road and King's Cross Pie Delis - but they are planning a matchday return.

The Dairy Clapham and Counter Culture - Robin Gill's restaurants in Clapham - will not be opening. 

Mountgrove Road Bothy in Highbury has closed its doors for good. 

Oklava Bakery + Wine - has closed, but the Shoreditch Oklava is very much still open for business.

Dominique Ansel - both the original bakery and the newer Treehouse close at the end of August.

Jidori (Dalston) - the end of the excellent yakitori restaurant

Emilia (Mayfair) - the restaurant in Bonhams from the people behind Quality Chop House.

Lucknow 49 (Mayfair) and Dum Biryani (Soho) - Dhruv Mittal's restaurants boh closed

 

July 2020

Rita's - the sandwich kings will not be coming back to King's Cross

Loyal Tavern - the Tom Cenci led restaurant will not reopen.

The Fat Bear - the popular American spot in the City has closed, but is looking for an alternative site. 

The Shepherdess Cafe - after 37 years, the City Road institution has been forced to close.  

Cereal Killer Cafe - the cafe closes, but their online business remains.

Moxon's Next Door - the restaurant next to the shop won't return, but the shop will expand. 

 

June 2020

The Greenhouse - the traditional French restaurant in Mayfair, which opened in 2004, has its closure confirmed by head chef Alex.

Sardine - The much-loved Clerkenwell restaurant from Alex Jackson won't be reopening.

Indian Accent - the high end and highly rated Indian restaurant will not reopen

Le Caprice - after 38 years, the Richard Caring flagship closed. It may yet reopen elsewhere.

The Ledbury has made all staff redundant and seems unlikely to open again. 

Wahlburgers - The Mark Wahlberg burger restaurant won't be returning

 

May 2020

Siren at the Goring has closed, Nathan Outlaw will not return to the restaurant post-lockdown.

Texture - After over 10 years in Marylebone, the Agnar Sverrisson’s Michelin-starred restaurant won't be back.

 

April 2020

All Hix restaurants - Mark Hix's restaurant group went into administration. 

 

March 2020

Oldroyd - Tom Oldroyd's Islington restaurant closed, but he's still at Dalston's The Duke of Richmond

The Frog Hoxton - Adam Handling announced that it would not be reopening post lockdown. The Covent Garden restaurant remains trading. 

Nobu Berkeley Street - the high-end Japanese restaurant closed (but a new hotel is coming soon).

 

February 2020

The Square - The Mayfair restaurant closed suddenly, right in the middle of service.

Linden Stores - The popular Highbury wine bar/restaurant finished up. 

 

January 2020

Brick House Bread bakery in Peckham closed, but it's to be replaced with Larry's (from the people behind Levan). 

Lamberts, neighbourhood restaurant in Balham closed. 

Moio in Stoke Newington closed, but they hope to be back in some form.

Gezellig - the Holborn restaurant called it a day

 

December 2019

Hix Soho - Mark Hix's restaurant was 10 years old. 

Kyseri closed in Fitzrovia - but it's being replaced by Oklava bakery and Wine from the same team.

Roe, seafood restaurant in Brixton shut up its container at Pop Brixton.

 

October 2019

Yen - formerly serving up soba noodles (via Paris) closed just off The Strand

Duddell's served up the last of its goldfish-shaped dumplings in London Bridge. 

Rambla in Soho closed - but it's transformed into SO LA, a Californian-inspired restaurant from the same chef, Victor Garvey. 

 

September 2019

Picture and Picture Marylebone - both restaurants in the group closed after six years of trading. 

 

November 2019

Breddos taco bar in Soho closed - it's been replaced by a Patty & Bun burger bar. 

 

August 2019

Claw closed its Soho restaurant, but they live on, serving up seafood in Seven Dials Market

Bellanger - the Corbin and King team closed its Islington Alsace restaurant. 

 

July 2019

Monty's Deli shut its Hoxton restaurant. You can still pick up their amazing reuben sandwiches and more at various Market Halls.

The Providores - the hugely influential restaurant from Peter Gordon closed the doos in Marylebone after 18 years. 

 

June 2019

Great Queen Street in Covent Garden closed. The same group's other pubs, The Anchor and Hope and the Canton Arms live on. 

Pitt Cue - the restaurant (and truck) which kicked off the barbecue revolution in London closed its City restaurant. 

Stem - Mark Jarvis (Anglo) closed his Mayfair restaurant. 

The Palmerston - the hugely popular East Dulwich restaurant closed after its lease wasn't renewed. 

Social Wine and Tapas - Jason Atherton shut his Marylebone restaurant. 

 

May 2019

Jamie Oliver's restaurant empire collapsed, taking with it 26 restaurants. Quite a few of them in London have since been replaced (Barbecoa is now The Ivy Asia). 

 

February 2019

Asia de Cuba closed in the St Martin's Lane hotel after 20 years. It's been replaced by The St Martin's Lane Kitchen.  

Londrino - Leandro Carreira's Bermondsey restaurant closed. It's since been replaced by Trivet. 

 

But - lots of restaurants have opened too...
