Since opening back in 2021, Toklas Bakery (which is a few doors down from the restaurant) has established itself as one of London's best bakeries. However, over in Temple, it may not be in one of the handiest places to get to (even though St Clement has turned the area into something of a hot spot).
Now, according to hospitality website Propel, that's about to change. A second Toklas bakery is getting ready to open, this time all the way across town in Chelsea.
Apparently, they'll be taking over the old Bread Ahead site on Pavilion Road. Bread Ahead themselves closed there last month (but they're busy opening in New York). It's a much more prominent space and also much bigger than the original Toklas Bakery.
At this stage, that's all we know. But you can probably expect something very similar to the original. So that's sourdough bread, fantastic viennoiserie and pastries and particularly great Roman-style sandwiches. The pastries change by the season, and alongside the regular cinnamon buns, cardamom buns and pain au chocolat, they've also had chocolate and marmalade buns, a raspberry spandauer and a raspberry cheesecake danish. They also put on great events, and the extra space in Chelsea will really help with that. We also wonder if they'll be doing anything with the large bakery school on the first floor there.
It's early days on this one, so expect more concrete news soon.
