It took a bit longer than we expected, particularly as they were such a big deal in NYC, but London really is getting into the slice shop trend right now. And the latest to get in on the action is Carmy's.
If that name seems familiar, it's because it happens to come from the same people behind Carmela's in Islington. That's Phil Chaykin (who's also behind Ugly Dumpling) as well as Gerry del Guercio and Paul Delany, best known as the Bite Twice social-media food duo. The latter put their money where their mouths were when they helped set up Carmela's and it clearly paid off. In this new venture, Carmela's head chef, Aaron Murphy and its general manager, Davide Paone are also getting in on the action.
It's a notably short menu and the focus is firmly on order-and-go. So there are just three pizzas - cheese, pepperoni and a rotating special (we're yet to hear what the first special will be). They say that they're intending to be all about "product, consistency and speed", which is why they've opted for the tight menu. As with Carmela's, all the ingredients will be sourced from the UK and Italy. As for the location, they're opening where the Monmouth Street Wines pop-up wine bar was until recently.
Carmela's really delivered in our opinion, so the same team opening a slice shop with Carmy's absolutely makes it one to watch.
