Almost exactly a year ago, we brought you the news that a new sushi bar was getting ready to open at The Hilton on Park Lane. Well, it turned out that we were a bit ahead of things. But now, 99 Sushi really is getting ready to open on Park Lane.
99 Sushi originally started in Madrid and has since expanded to Marbella and Barcelona and as far afield as Abu Dhabi (where it has a Michelin star). They say they focus on premium ingredients like Atlantic fatty bluefin tuna and as for that name, it's apparently their philosophy to get things "99% perfect" (they think 100% is a bit of an unrealistic stretch). While primarily a sushi restaurant, the menu does apparently have some Spanish influences (other menus have dishes like grilled toro mixed with smoked Iberian beef).
The London restaurant sounds like it will be a little different from the 99 Sushis that have come before it. Essentially, this one is going to look a lot swankier than the others. We're told to expect lots of gold, mirrored surfaces and "purple and crimson velvet". Alongside the main dining area, there will be a four-seater sushi bar and apparently a "cabaret bar" too.
The other restaurants do have takeaway, so if that's also added to the London version, it could be a very handy addition to Mayfair. It also has a pavement terrace, with bonsai installations. There's no menu yet, but we'll keep an eye out for that in the run-up to opening.
