Born and raised in Japan, Angelo moved to London at just 18 where his first job was at Restaurant Gordon Ramsay under Clare Smyth. Having worked at Trinity in London and then Eleven Madison Park in New York, he returned to London to become head chef at Restaurant Story. He opened his own restaurant Humble Chicken in 2021, reinventing it a few years later to huge critical acclaim and the awarding of one and then two Michelin stars. A resident of Camden, he's agreed to share his favourite spots in that part of London with us.
Half Cut Market
396 York Wy, London N7 9LW
A neighbourhood wine bar and restaurant. It’s mainly natural wine, cocktails and small plates like pasta and skewers. They also host pop-ups with chefs from all around the country, so it’s worth keeping an eye out for who is in the kitchen. You can also get bottles to take home.
Salvino
47 Brecknock Rd, London N7 0BT
This is an old-school, family-run Italian deli. They have all sorts of Italian imports like cheese, ham, dry pasta, canned vegetables, but there is also fresh ravioli and sausages on Saturdays. The atmosphere is amazing, and the produce is really good quality.
Seto
5-6 Plender St, London NW1 0JN
A very low-key Japanese joint that’s great for a quick meal post gym. There is plenty to choose from on the menu, but their ramen is a standout. It’s family-run and has the sort of atmosphere you would find in small restaurants in Japan. Just simple, authentic and not fussy.
Camden Coffee Roastery
12 Castlehaven Rd, London NW1 8QU
This is a roastery and coffee shop in one, right in the heart of Camden Market. It’s a great place to hide from the crowds. They have great beans so I always get some to use at home when I pass by.
Three Uncles
2nd Floor, Hawley Wharf, Water Lane, London NW1 8AA
This is a Cantonese Roast meets specialist that does really good value-loaded boxes full of roast duck and pork. Another good option to get something quick post-gym. I prefer getting rice over noodles. Their wontons are also a good addition.
