Nikkei restaurant Bamboo Mat has been proving a big hit in Stratford - so much that it's gearing up for a second opening in Canary Wharf.
Before moving to Stratford, the original Bamboo Mat opened in Leyton, where Grace Dent described it as: "It’s a smaller, cheaper and better Chotto Matte, without all the shouty people and art installations. What’s not to love about that?" As with the original, the new opening will focus on a mix of Japanese and Peruvian cuisine or "excellent plates of Peruvian joy", as Grace put it.
That menu includes dishes like ceviche deluxe (with sea bass, scallop, prawn, roasted peppers, tiger's milk, sweet potato, red onion and chancha corn) or ox cheek with yuzu potato puree, teriyaki sauce and chives. You can also expect a strong sushi selection and desserts that include a tonka bean crème brûlée. As for the cocktails, those will also lean Japanese and Peruvian, and yes, there will be a pisco sour on there.
The new location is a two-storey affair that's bigger than their Stratford restaurant, with the raw bar and cocktail bar on the ground floor and robata grill and main kitchen on the first floor.
So if you're living or working in the Canary Wharf area, this is one to watch out for.
