Planning a shopping trip to Oxford Street? Here are a few places on and off the main thoroughfare where you can pop in for a bite to eat when you lose the will to do any more shopping or simply want to escape the crowds.
The Marlborough
24 N Audley St, London W1K 6WD
London’s hot new pub is just a few minutes walk from Oxford Street, serving up amazing pizza courtesy of Crisp Mayfair and excellent Guinness thanks to the help of the crew at The Devonshire in the set-up. Fancy a slice and a pint? This is the perfect spot.
Supernova
15 North Audley Street, London W1K 6WW
Why bother with McDonald’s when you can drop by this smash burger spot, close to Selfridges, for a superior offering? The menu is super tight, so there’s no time wasted dithering about what to have.
Aki London
1 Cavendish Square, London W1G 0LA
If you’re making a real day out of a trip to the West End for shopping, then treat yourselves by booking into Aki. Both the classic and contemporary takes on sushi are worth trying and there’s a downstairs bar if you want to carry on the fun after dinner.
Berbere
50 James Street, London W1U 1HB
The top-rated pizza group’s central London outpost is a very useful place to go for good pizza when you’re midway through a shopping trip. Sourdough pizza is the name of the game here, but their deep-fried dough balls are also unmissable.
Bar Kroketa
St Christopher's Place, 23 Barrett St, London W1U 1BF
If you're looking for somewhere to get a relatively quick bite to eat, then this is well worth a look. Coming from the people behind Brindisa, this is all about Spanish tapas and yes, they do fantastic croquetas here.
The Beaumont
8 Balderton St, Brown Hart Gardens, London W1K 6TF
This gorgeous Art Deco-style hotel, just yards from the front door of Selfridges, is something of a hidden gem. The food offering here has been completely overhauled by incoming chef Lisa Goodwin-Allen, with the modern British menu of Rosi being the big draw. Le Magritte Bar is also the perfect spot for great bar snacks and cocktails if you're looking for a quick pit stop.
Market Halls
9 Holles St, London W1G 0BD
This food hall is mere metres away from Oxford Circus and it's perfect for dropping into and grabbing something from one of the many outlets. Treats in store include Gopal’s Corner’s amazing roti canai, tacos from Breddos, gourmet kebabs from Le Bab, Thai food from Krapow, burgers from Black Bear and more.
Bibi
42 North Audley Street, Mayfair, London W1K 6ZR
Within minutes of Selfridges, this Indian restaurant has been a continued success, marrying the best of British produce in serving up 'impactful' Indian food. Whether you're sitting up at the bar or manage to nab a booth, you'll be sure of an amazing meal here and the lunchtime "teja" menu is a great deal.
Panadera
7 Picton Place, London W1U 1BN
One of two great bakery/cafes that are very close to Selfridges, this is a Filipino bakery, which specialises in some amazing sandos and pastries as well as an excellent coffee and matcha selection of drinks.
Sunday in Brooklyn
10-12 James St, London W1U 1EE
This is a sister restaurant to the Notting Hill success story (which itself came from New York originally). If you're looking for a great brunch in-between shopping, this is one of the best bets in the area. Don't leave without trying their hazelnut praline pancakes.
Abuelo
7-11 Cavendish Place, W1G 0QD
This is a small (but growing) boutique coffee chain which combines the Australian and Argentinian heritage from its architect owner (so it looks fantastic too). You'll find lots of Latin American beans here, alongside Australian-style brunch food.
Bao Marylebone
56 James St, London W1U 1HF
Just north of Oxford Street and close to the side entrance to Selfridges, you'll find the Marylebone BAO restaurant. This one features Taiwanese dumplings as well as the signature bao and there's a lot of counter dining space, making it a particularly useful dropping-in spot for solo shoppers.
Apricity
68 Duke St, London W1K 6JU
Chef Chantelle Nicholson’s plant-forward and sustainability-focused restaurant is a great spot to head to for post-shopping recovery and if you’re particularly pleased with your purchases, celebrate with a low-waste cocktail or two.
The Barley Mow
82 Duke St, London W1K 6JG
It’s always useful to know a good pub just off Oxford Street where you can enjoy a quiet pint or decent glass of wine without too much of a fuss made. The Barley Mow is just that place and the upstairs dining room is a hidden oasis.
Mercato Mayfair
St Mark's, North Audley St, London W1K 6ZA
This is the second huge market from the same people who opened Mercato Metropolitano in Elephant & Castle. Set inside a deconsecrated church, it's worth heading in to take a look at the hugely impressive space. In there, you'll find everything from focaccia sandwiches and steaks to Basque cheesecakes.
The Wigmore
15 Langham Pl, Marylebone, London W1B 3DE
Part of The Langham London, this pub is run by Michel Roux Jr but it's much more like a standalone gastropub - and as such is one of the handiest drinking dens in the area. That said, the food is well worth a look - the pies and masala scotch egg particularly.
Tendril
5 Princes St, London W1B 2LQ
Chef Rishim Sachdeva's restaurant is just off Oxford Circus and is a plant-focused Indian affair. It's all about (mostly) vegan dishes (there's the odd use of cheese) and it makes good use of his experience in both London and Indian kitchens.
Beast
Where: 3 Chapel Place, London W1G 0BG
Goodman, the people behind the incredibly successful Burger & Lobster, opened this restaurant, which is focused purely around steak and king crab. Expect communal tables in a pretty spectacular room, a big wine list and a limited spirit list too. Not one of the cheaper options in the area, so bear that in mind.
Chisou
Where: 22-23 Woodstock Street, London, W1C 2AR
This Mayfair location for Chisou is handy for both Oxford and Regent Street. Expect modern Japanese sushi and grilled dishes cooking in a more classic setting as well as a small, counter dining only, sake and sushi bar called Noren.
Harry's Bar
Where: 30-34 James Street, London W1U 1EU
This Italian restaurant is the sister restaurant to Harry’s Dolce Vita and 'inspired by' the private members club of the same name in Mayfair. Expect an Italian menu in a great-looking room.
Isola
Where: 3-5 Barrett Street, St Christopher’s Place, London W1U 1AY
Tucked in off the main drag on St Christopher's Place, Isola is a Sicilian-inspired grand cafe from the San Carlo Group. Think lobster spaghetti and truffle ravioli in a beautiful space, with a large terrace for alfresco dining.
The Italian Greyhound
Where: 62 Seymour Street, London W1H 5BN
This casual Italian bar and restaurant serves up classic Italian dishes and cocktails. There's also a handy wraparound terrace if you're looking to eat alfresco.
The Mayfair Chippy
Where: 14 North Audley Street, London W1K 6WE
As you might be able to tell from the name, this is Mayfair's very own Fish and Chip shop. So if you're in the mood for cod and chips, this really is the place to head for. Fast food done well as evidenced by the perma-queues.
MEATliquor W1
Where: 37-38 Margaret St, Marylebone, London W1G 0JF
They expanded from a pop-up, roaming outlet to become one of the biggest burger restaurants in London. Their first restaurant was in W1 and has now been replaced with this even bigger venue. There are burgers, hot dogs, lethal cocktails and - most usefully - a very late licence.
NAC - aka North Audley Canteen
Where: 41 N Audley St, Mayfair, London W1K 6ZP
The North Audley Canteen is a Mayfair bistro and cocktail bar serving a great line in French sharing plates. Founded by childhood friends it's one of Mayfair's classic lunch spots.
Roti Chai
Where: 3-4 Portman Mews South, London W1H 6HS
An Indian street cafe with an urban London feel with small Indian bites including "bun tikka" and "bun kebab" - essentially Indian-styled burgers - and a larger restaurant with bigger plates downstairs.
Zoilo
Where: 9 Duke Street, London W1U 3EG
Chef Patron Diego Jacquet is in charge of the food here. Expect the very best of Argentine cuisine using both the best British ingredients as well as Argentine beef (of course). If you can, get a seat in the basement at the counter that surrounds the kitchen - it's super cosy. Look out for his pizza restaurant Florencio in nearby Seymour Place.

The Shaston Arms
4-6 Ganton Street, London W1F 7QN
Always a popular drinking hole in Carnaby, The Shaston Arms now has a food menu that’s worth seeking out. New owner Joe Grossmann also runs the highly-rated Waterman’s Arms in Barnes. You could just pop by for small dishes like the beef fat onion rings with smoked cod’s roe but there’s a lot more on there besides.
Heard
31 Foubert's Place, London W1F 7QG
Having headed up a two-Michelin-starred restaurant, chef Jordan Bailey brings his culinary expertise to the burger market with Heard. The menu here is a mixture of smash and normal burgers and the drinks pairing from Jordan’s sommelier wife Majken elevates this still further.
Maresco
45 Berwick Street, London W1F 8SF
A mix of Spanish and Scottish influences are on offer at this handy tapas bar just south of Oxford Street. Grabbing a window seat for some small plates (the seafood is particularly good) and a great glass of Spanish wine is perfect for people watching.
Arôme Bakery
27 Duke St, London W1U 1LE
This popular boutique bakery group is best known for fusion pastries like its miso bacon escargot, gula melaka coconut twist and honey butter toast. There are seats to sit in, if you want to rest for a bit, or you can pop in for a pastry to go.
Arcade Food Hall
103-105 New Oxford St, London WC1A 1DB
This food hall by Centre Point edges into top-tier foodie territory with outlets like Plaza Khao Gaeng by chef Luke Farrell and Supa Ya Ramen. The line-up changes from time to time, Gracey's Pizza is the newest addition at the time of writing, and there’s a strong focus on cocktails here, too.
Circolo Popolare
Where: 40-41 Rathbone Pl, Fitzrovia, London W1T 1HX
The Big Mamma Group's second opening in London saw them hit up Fitzrovia with a massively OTT slice of Mediterranean charm and flavour. It's always extremely popular, so expect to wait for a table.
Lima
Where: 31 Rathbone Place, Fitzrovia, London W1T 1JH
This Peruvian restaurant is from Virgilio Martinez, former Executive Chef at Astrid y Gaston, listed on the San Pellegrino World’s Best Restaurants list. It aims to "integrate Peruvian traditional cuisine with a modern and contemporary twist."
Aqua Kyoto
Where: 30 Argyll St, W1F 7EB, London W1B 3BR
Not only does this Japanese restaurant have a large heated terrace, but it's also a very useful place to know about if you fancy a bento box lunch. They also do a good kids menu at the weekends.
Arros QD
Where: 64 Eastcastle St, Fitzrovia, London W1W 8NQ
As the name suggests, multiple Michelin-starred chef and restaurateur Quique Dacosta's London restaurant has a big focus on rice with loads of paella on the menu. But it's not all rice, and there's a cracking bar upstairs as well.
Berners Tavern
Where: 10 Berners Street, London W1T 3NP
This is the main restaurant at the London Edition and Jason Atherton is in charge of things. Expect a more upmarket affair to some of Atherton's other spots and a frankly jaw-dropping room.
Ember Yard
Where: 60-61 Berwick Street, London W1F 8SU
This restaurant comes from the people behind Salt Yard and takes its inspiration from the rural Basque and Italian methods of smoking and grilling over charcoal. The menu is almost entirely cooked on a custom-built charcoal-fired grill.
Laksamania
Where: 92 Newman St, Fitzrovia, London W1T 3EZ
Coming from a family of well-known Hainanese chefs it's no wonder head chef Danny knows his way around a good laksa. They also have a special vegan menu.
As well as our list of standalone restaurants, check out these options in department stores.
Ikea
214 Oxford St, London W1C 1DA
While Londoners may still be mourning the loss of the big Top Shop here, the arrival of Ikea in its stead does have some benefits. Key among them is the handy Ikea cafe where you can enjoy Swedish meatballs and chips and self-serve soft ice cream. Perfect for refuelling mid-shopping.
Din Tai Fung
Selfridges, 400 Oxford St, London W1A 1AB
Din Tai Fung is always a popular spot and this in-store outpost on the fourth floor of Selfridges is a great place to enjoy their always-good xiao long bao alongside new vegan specials. Oh, and there are robot waiters too.
Jackson Boxer at The Corner
Where: 400 Oxford St, Marylebone, London W1A 1AB
The arrival of wunderkind chef Jackson Boxer at Selfridges has definitely given the store an added boost of restaurant credibility. He's taken over the light-filled Corner Restaurant for an extended residency.
