For more than 20 years the British restaurant Roast has lorded it over Borough Market, its dining room literally perched above the market floor. But now there's change on the horizon with plans to open a second branch, this time in Shoreditch.
The space they're taking on is the cavernous restaurant at the Virgin Hotels London Shoreditch. That was previously the Mondrian and you might remember either Marcus Samuelsson's Red Rooster or Dani Garcia's Bibo which were in this space before. Now we've moved from American and Spanish back to British, with Sunday roasts and proper Full English breakfasts on the menu.
Dishes roam the British Isles from a haggis and pork Scotch egg to Cornish scallops crudo and braised lamb scrumpets. The signature roast will be a 42-day-aged roast beef with all the trimmings, and there'll be a beef Wellington and a range of steaks from the grill alongside a nut roast and veggie burgers for the non-meat eaters. Expect daily specials too, including a steak ale and bone marrow pie on Mondays and roast suckling pig on Thursdays. And we note that there's also a separate halal menu for the main a la carte and the Sunday roast.
Breakfasts have always been a big thing for Roast, and there's an extensive breakfast menu planned here with the classic Full Borough spread, bacon butties, all kinds of benedicts as well as more interesting options like tattie scones and smoked kippers.
The room also looks as though it's had quite the makeover. They've built out into the conservatory and there's also a chef's table planned. The look they're channelling is "contemporary Victorian-inspired urban conservatory".
