If you're a proper South London foodie, there's an odds-on chance that you've already come across Banook Bagels. Run by husband-and-wife team Ashley Mah and David Dalrymple, the pair started out, as so many foodie businesses we know, as a micro-bakery during lockdown. More recently, they were trading out of an industrial estate at the back of Burgess Park. But now they have realised their dream and opened their first bricks-and-mortar bakery in East Dulwich.
If you haven't been before, you can expect to find boiled and baked bagels to take away, along with filled bagels and also cream cheese pots. Bagel flavours include poppy and sesame, everything seasoning, plus rosemary and sea salt, while they offer classic, maple, green onion, jalapeno and vegan cream cheeses. Filled bagels include seasonal options like wild garlic, ham with whole grain mustard mayo and Monterey Jack cheese and a veggie option of watermelon radish, cucumber, pickled red onion, and cress on herby lemon cream cheese.
In the new space, they're hoping to expand the menu - breakfast sandwiches have been mooted - and there's space to eat outside. Early days suggest they're still selling out every day, so it's probably worth coming early if you want to secure your bagel order.
