Miokuru hopes to mix up London's crazy handroll trend with a focus on Britain's fishermen, farmers and brewers

miokuru handroll bar opening in soho

We're not quite sure how this happens, but every once in a while you can see a massive trend rolling its way out through the London restaurant scene. Over the last twelve months, the new London openings all seem to have either been Italian or Japanese handroll bars.

Into the latter's mix that's already seen Kumori, Temaki, Maki Nori and Saltwater opening within months of each other, comes Miokuru in Soho. It's tucked away on Warwick Street, just off Regent Street, and it's another tiny space with room for just 20 diners.

So what makes this place different to all the rest? They're saying it's because of their focus on using the best British ingredients, whether that's the freshest day boat fish or making the most of seasonal produce.

To that end, there will be dishes like pressed scallops with seasonal house pickles and seared chalkstream trout sashimi alongside handrolls featuring Cornish white crab with wild garlic mayo and dry-aged beef tartare with wasabi mustard & herbs.

The British/Japanese love affair continues with the drinks offering, including London-brewed sake and beer and Japanese-inspired cocktails.

And if you have a bunch of friends who love sushi, you might want to think about taking over their private dining space, which seems the Miokuru team turning their bar into a speakeasy-style affair for up to 10 people.
