Londoners' capacity to be excited by the arrival of a new bakery knows no bounds, so the arrival of a new one in Bethnal Green should be of interest. This will be the third opening by Burnt, a neighbourhood cafe and restaurant with branches in Shepherd's Bush and Bloomsbury. But this, their first East London venture, will also feature its own in-house bakery.
The bakery addition will mean that not only will East London folk be able to enjoy their popular pistachio croissant, but a whole load more bakes including a rhubarb and apple Chausson and - this one we're really intrigued by - a savoury Welsh rarebit custard Danish. Coffee will come courtesy of Climpson & Son and their brunches are bound to be a draw too.
Their new home will be on Poyser Street, making this stretch of railway arches, which already has an Argentine empanada shop and focaccia bakery, a bit of a carby focal point. The bakery bit will open first. A few weeks later, they'll be doing brunch and lunch, and the eventual aim is to also introduce an evening service. To give you an idea of what to expect, their evening menu in West London includes dishes like devilled miso mushroom toast, Devon crab risotto and Kent squash and truffled honey ricotta tortilla.
"Bethnal Green feels like the first time we’ve been able to bring everything together properly," says co-owner Honor Logan. "Baking has always been a big part of Burnt, but we’ve never really had the space to do it the way we wanted. Now we can make everything in-house, develop new ideas, and give that side of the business the attention it deserves."
