Japanese handroll restaurant Temaki opened in Brixton in 2021 and quickly found a dedicated following. However, all good things come to an end and they closed up in Brixton last August, and went on the hunt for a new central London location. They've now found just that, thanks to help from The Crown Estate. The new Temaki will be launching on Maddox Street in Mayfair, taking over a space right next to Maddox Gallery and a few doors down from Patara.
Not surprisingly, Temaki focuses on the Japanese handrolls of its title, originally taking its inspiration from Californian handroll bars. The temaki are a big part of the menu; options at their Brixton bar included lobster with egg yolk, miso and citrus as well as prawn tempura, otoro tuna, teriyaki mushroom and BBQ eel. Also on the Brixton menu (and we assume the Mayfair one) were special set menus which let you try a selection of their handrolls in one sitting.
There's more besides the handrolls, though, as we're told they'll also have other dishes like Temaki’s crispy rice topped with premium cuts of fish, A4 wagyu sliders, sashimi, and revolving sandos. And as for the drinks, there will be saké on offer (which should include sake flights) and a small cocktail list with options like a sansho peppercorn gimlet or a sakura yuzu negroni.
This central London location will also be bigger than the original, adding a second space downstairs which will seat 28 (in addition to the 16 seats at the bar upstairs). This will also be inspired by Japanese listening bars and London does like a listening bar right now.
Their founder, A M Dupree is raring to go: "We’ve been working on some fun new dishes and will, of course, serve our signature handrolls - I can’t wait to open the doors!"
