Craving some spicy Thai food as the nights draw in? Allow us to draw your attention to London’s forthcoming second outlet of Plaza Khao Gaeng, which is joining the ever-expanding dining options at Borough Yards. It will be taking over the old Vinoteca spot.
If you’re a fan of southern Thai cooking, you’re probably already au fait with Plaza Khao Gaeng’s presence at Arcade Food Hall on Tottenham Court Road, with chef–founder Luke Farrell at the helm. It opened in 2022 and his khua kling muu made our list earlier this year of London’s spiciest dishes. It was awarded a Michelin Bib Gourmand in 2023. Luke also opened Speedboat Bar, another Thai restaurant, in late 2022 around the corner in Chinatown, followed by another iteration of Speedboat Bar in Notting Hill, just a few months ago.
So, when you’re clearly onto a good thing, why not expand your Thai-food empire south of the river? The Borough Yards addition to the Plaza Khao Gaeng family is indeed welcome news. You can expect the most seasonal of produce, straight from Luke’s greenhouses at his Ryewater Nursery in Dorset.
The menu here will feature some brand new dishes, specifically concentrating on Thailand’s lesser-known southern provinces, with highlights including:
- Kha Muu Paloh - soy-braised pork hock, served whole with a sharp Nam Jim chilli vinegar sauce
- Gaeng Gati Puu Bai Cha Plu - Dorset hen crab simmered in a thick coconut curry scented with wild betel leaves
- Pad Phet Pla Tord - Crisp whole sea bass covered with a red jungle curry rich with crispy pork lard and herbs.
- Pad Prik Gaeng Goong Sator - Tiger prawns stir-fried with sator beans, lime leaf and coconut cream
- Yam Strawberry Phrao Kua - Reimagining Borough Market’s strawberries with roasted coconut and tiny jasmine fish from Songkhla Lake in a fiery dressing.
As for the desserts, they'll include Pudding Maprao Ohn, a coconut pudding with candied pumpkin and Petchaburi palm sugar syrup. Drinks, meanwhile, will have new additions like Taeng Mo Martini - watermelon-infused vodka, fresh watermelon juice and
Cointreau.
The restaurant itself takes over another railway arch in Borough Yards, as well as some extra alleys, and will fit 78 diners in a double-height space, with a Kha Muu cart the centrepiece of the design.
The original Plaza Khao Gaeng has been a big hit in Arcade, and it sounds like this standalone opening in Borough Yards will be just as popular.
