7/11/24 - updated with menu details and a look inside

Six months after 'vibe dining' destination Geode in Knightsbridge closed its doors, a restaurant team that's related are now trying again in the same space. Michelin-starred chef Rohit Ghai is opening Vatavaran on the same site (his other restaurants Kutir and Manthan are part of the Arrow Mayfair Group and Arrow Hospitality was the company who opened Geode.).

The site in question is one of those multi-storeyed restaurants and here we're told that each level is going to "symbolise unique element of the Himalayan landscape". At the very top, there will be a fourth-floor cocktail bar called Shikhar (that's Sanskrit for mountain peak). Behind the drinks list here is Ghai's business partner Abhi Sangwan.

Meanwhile, on the menu you'll find:

  • Robata-grilled wild tiger prawns with chickpea and coconut
  • Balchao guinea fowl paired with smoked beetroot
  • Whole rotisserie masala chicken with burnt spices and bone marrow sauce
  • A sous-vide pineapple and coconut dish with jaggery and chutney

The arrival of Vatavaran means London gets another new luxury Indian dining spot, following hard on the heels of the arrival of Ambassadors Clubhouse in Mayfair. Both Manthan and Kutir were well reviewed by the critics, so this pivot sounds like a positive move.
