How Hoppers in the Tea Building will look
Updated 4/11 with confirmation about the opening.
Earlier this year, after more than a decade in business, James Lowe's Lyle's shut up shop for good. Since May, the restaurant has been vacant. But now, thanks to an eagle-eyed Hot Dinners reader, we know what's opening there next.
Given that the major backers of Lyle's were JKS, who clearly retain the lease of the space, it seemed likely that they'd replace it with another of their brands. After all, that's what they did with Lowe's previous venture Flor in Borough Market, which is now a Berenjak. Here, they'll be launching their latest Hoppers. It's been nearly six years since Hoppers' last opening in King's Cross, so it seems about time for a new outpost in this part of town.
Expect this to be one of the smaller Hoppers in the group (tiny Soho original notwithstanding), and with a menu that actually breaks from the others. Led by co-founder Karan Gokani, Hoppers is usually "inspired by the toddy shops, coastal journeys, and spice gardens of Sri Lanka". However, this version will look beyond Sri Lanka, towards South India, now including dishes from other regions like Chettinad's "fiery nose to tail curries" and Chennai's "aromatic biryanis".
Hoppers' signature dishes, like their mutton rolls, jaggery lamb kari and bone marrow varuval will also be on the menu, of course. We'll have more details of the new menu closer to the opening date.
Thanks to Hot Dinners reader Lee for the tip.
