Since becoming Evolv Group, what was D&D has been going through something of a quiet revolution, led by its new CEO Martin Williams (who used to head up the M group of restaurants). Now they're ready to reveal their big next step, opening Liverpool Street Chop House & Tavern, taking over what was the New Street Grill site.
It's not the first chop house in the group, of course, as they also have Paternoster Chop House (albeit in a new location since 2020, the original site opens as a Vagabond this month) and one in Butler's Wharf.
Mike Reid, who was at M with Martin Williams (as well as Le Gavroche and Restaurant Gordon Ramsay), is leading the food here. The menu will embrce an old school approach, with dishes like "pea soope" from a 1669 recipe. There will also be a big focus on meat, of course, such as Barnsley lamb chop with anchovy dressing and beef shin & oyster suet pudding (although there will be an oyster section of the menu too). Steaks come from The Ethical Butcher and we like the sound of their team-up with the excellent Blenheim Forge - you'll be given the choice of one of six handcrafted steak knives before you start the main event.
The site here has had something of a revamp - lots of dark wood, gold and brass will be in evidence. As for drinks, they will be serving Guinness, but even that's different as it'll be served in tankards (we'll have to see what the purists have to say about that). And this is just the start - what they introduce here is also going to be rolled out to the Paternoster and Butler's Wharf chop houses.
