12/5/23 - updated with the opening date for Little Kudu
If you’re a big fan of the South-African flavours of Kudu, then we have some good news for you - their new restaurant Little Kudu is on the way.
Kudu first arrived on the Peckham scene in 2018 to much acclaim. Since then, we’ve watched the group grow to Smokey Kudu and Curious Kudu and then Kudu Grill in Nunhead, which we only recently visited for a Test Drive (and were very impressed).
Little Kudu itself will be a contemporary tapas-style restaurant that's taking over what was the Smokey Kudu space, which has had a major refurbish. There, the food will be similar in ethos to Kudu's other outlets, thanks to the South-African-born team of chef patron Patrick Williams and head chef Chace Wagenhauser. On the small-plates menu you can expect the likes of:
- Ham hock terrine with biltong scratchings
- Smoked peri-peri mussels
- Braaibroodjie (South African grilled cheese sandwich)
- The Little Kudu Loaf with Cape Malay butter
There’ll also be a short wine list with, you guessed it, a heavy showing from South African vineyards.
But wait, what’s happening to Smokey Kudu? Never fear, it’s on the move and it sees the Kudu team taking the restaurant far from its Peckham origins - to the King’s Road in Chelsea, no less. There it's reopened as a 30-cover cocktail bar in the new 5,000 sq ft RIXO flagship store, for those of you who like a little vintage-inspired clothes shopping with your Braai Negronis. Smokey Kudu has launched a brand-new cocktail list to match the occasion, where a Kudu Colada (pineapple juice, Amarula, cream of coconut, supasuwa) could be the thing to sip while browsing RIXO’s range.
