What: Old Chang Kee
In a nutshell: Curry puffs in Fitzrovia
Summing it all up: After success in Covent Garden, a new Old Chang Kee is opening up in Fitzrovia. It's bigger than the original and all the much-loved curry puffs will be there.
The low-down
First, they came to London in a pop-up that caused queues around the block. Then they settled down in Covent Garden. Now Old Chang Kee are bringing their famous curry puffs to Fitzrovia as they get ready to open their next place (where Benito's Hat used to be).
At Old Chang Kee, it's all about their curry puffs (apparently they sell 1.5 million of them worldwide every month). The puffs are a combo of meat, potatoes and aromatic curry spices in a pastry parcel, hail from Singapore and have "a combination of the secret spices" that have made them hugely popular. On the menu in Covent Garden are chicken, beef rendang, potato puffs and Singapore chilli crab sticks. But alongside the puffs, they also serve up laksa, Singapore chicken curry, sweet and sour crispy chicken and chicken rendang dishes.
Their new place in Fitzrovia (acquired by the Shelley Sandzer group) will be bigger than Covent Garden, seating around 30 and inside it's "inspired by a typical Singaporean kopitiam – an old-style Asian coffee shop".
