What: Yen Burger
In a nutshell: Asian-style burgers with a health slant
Summing it all up: Yen Nguyen is brings her East-meets-West burger chain idea to life, featuring ingredients like shiso, edamame and kimchi on gluten-free buns from Bread Ahead.
The low-down
If you’re so over cheese, bacon or pulled pork on your burger, then step right this way to Yen Burger, who’ll be injecting the humble dish with a bit of Asian charm when they open their doors on Southwark.
Instead of the usual toppings, you’ll be able to order your burger with zingy shiso, kimchi mayonnaise or Japanese chilli. And there’ll be at least four types of patty for you to choose from: Aberdeen Black Angus, Wagyu beef, sustainable cod and an as-of-yet-undisclosed veggie alternative. For buns, Yen Burger will be calling on the considerable talents of Bread Ahead, who’ll be supplying them daily with fresh, gluten-free buns.
In lieu of chips, you’ll have the option of sweet potato fries, crunchy Asian-style slaw, or, for those who’ve somehow ended up in a burger restaurant despite being on a health kick, freshly steamed edamame beans.
Cocktails will be spice-infused and use ingredients like kumquat and calpis - a Japanese drink that's both milky and fizzy (and tastes a lot better than it sounds, we swear.)
Behind the operation is Yen Nguyen, who cut her teeth at a number of restaurants throughout the UK and Germany, which inspired her East-meets-West burger concept. “I wanted to create something that is truly unique and combines western food with and light east Asian ingredients - an Asian burger. The opening of Yen Burger sees this dream come to fruition and I’m so excited to start welcoming guests into the restaurant,” she said.
