The Friday Edit
All the news that was fit to print (but we just didn't get around to covering this week)...
Vodka and snack flights? We're SO on board
Head to Mark's Bar at HIX Soho to start your weekend with three mini vodka cocktails each paired alongside their own plate. First there's a Black Cow Dirty Martini with an oyster, then you get a Black Cow Spritz with Spiced Portland crab chips and finally an Espresso Martini served up with a Peruvian Gold chocolate mousse and crisp honeycomb. All yours for £25.
International Waffle Day is an actual thing
This Sunday is allegedly International Waffle Day. But don't ask why, just make sure you head to Duck & Waffle where they're putting on a sweet and savoury all-waffle menu just for the day. So there's Foie Gras with marmalade and pork crackling or the one we really fancy, ‘Spring Fever Elvis’ a combo of rhubarb, blood orange, lemon tea jam, almond butter and mascarpone Chantilly.
#CookForSyria pastries in Islington
Running for one month at Pophams Bakery in Islington is a limited edition #BakeForSyria pastry - an oval shaped croissant with a baklava filling of ground almonds, walnuts, rose water and a pistachio paste. It's £3.20 and 100% of proceeds will go to Unicef's Syrian Relief Fund.
Here's £45k to change to a food career...
That's what one lucky person will hear when they win the new Julia Child scholarship at Le Cordon Bleu London school. The 9 month course Grand Diplôme® is up for grabs for one passionate food and cooking enthusiast – regardless of age, location or background. AND you get an internship with Monica Galetti at Mere.
Go get us a gyoza
You may have come across Rainbo and their rather lovely gyoza at street food spots over town, but did you know they've just opened in the hut in the middle of Finsbury Avenue Square? So if you fancy something different for lunch - like one of their gyoza bento boxes or katsu wraps, grab something here to make the rest of your colleagues green with envy.
Vegan feasting just got real
Need a group venue where there's plenty of choice for vegans? The new vegan menu at The Real Greek features 30 recipes ranging from Jackfruit Stifado to Vegan Moussaka and a whole range of cold vegan meze like Beetroot and Lentil Salad, Spicy Walnut and Roasted Red Pepper Dip, and Green Pea Fava topped with red onions and tomato. Sorted.
Burger alert! Tempura crab incoming
United Chip in Clerkenwell have just put this gorgeous looking thing on the menu. They describe it as "a heavenly combination of tempura soft shell crab, lettuce, pickles and Bangkok mayonnaise in a wonderfully soft brioche bun". Which pretty much sold it to us. It's on for £12.
Now THIS is what we call a Brucie bonus
You've got to love a city where someone can set up a rolling event called Hungry Heart, devoted to - and we quote - "beers, burgers and bumper to bumper Springsteen all night long". Hungry Heart was dreamt up by Hannah from Burgers & Bruce and Thom from Pizza Pilgrims. Their aim? "To recreate the feeling of getting together for a Bruce gig." The next one takes place on Saturday 21 April at the Star of Kings in King's Cross.
