Bistro Union

40 Abbeville Road, Clapham, London SW14 9NG

Adam Byatt and ex St John Bread and Wine chef Karl Goward have launched this neighbourhood bistro with a strong focus on British food. We particularly like the idea that you can buy spirits and store them on site for future visits.

The Fox and Grapes

9 Camp Road, Wimbledon Common, London SW19 4UN

Michelin starred chef Claude Bosi has joined up with his brother to set up this pub/restaurant in the heart of wealthy Wimbledon. This has a more British state of affairs from a place that steers more towards restaurant than pub.

chezbruce

This Wandsworth institution is run by Bruce Poole (in partnership with Nigel Platts-Martin). It's been serving a classical French menu with Mediterranean influences since 1995.

ganapati-new

38 Holly Grove, London SE15 5DF

A relative old-timer of Peckham restaurants, having opened in 2004, Ganapati is chef-owner Claire Fisher’s ode to India. The colourful space is filled with mouth-watering aromas that pave the way for the delicious, homely food. The thalis are fail-safe favourites or go off-piste with their more inventive offerings such as tuna with smoked tamarind. The desserts are also great.

The Old Brewery

The Pepys Building, The Old Royal Naval College, London SE10 9LW

Angels and Gypsies

Church Street Hotel, 29-33 Camberwell Church Street, London SE5 8TR

Constancia

52 Tanner Street, London SE1 3PH

Constancia is the latest steakhouse to hit London, and the reviewers seem to be impressed with this Argentine Grill (aka "parilla"). An independent restaurant, set up by two brothers, this has more individuality than the chains, and is highly recommended to anyone looking for a good steak south of the river.

Lola Rojo

140 Wandsworth Bridge Road, London SW6 2UL

Owners Antonio and Cristina wanted to offer Londoners a chance to try some of the new wave of cooking coming out of Spain - so this is less a tapas joint and more of a small plates restaurant, complete with a handy deli if you haven't time to stop and eat. There's also a sister restaurant in Battersea.

Fisher's

19 Fulham High Street, London SW6 3JH

Avalon

16 Balham Hill, London SW12 9EB

Sometimes if you want to find somewhere decent to eat and drink in your manor, you have to go out and open it yourself. That's the mantra behind Avalon - the owners are all locals with four other South London gastropubs under their belt. It looks like they've used all their learnings on Avalon which looks to be a huge hit in these here parts.

Fish and Grill

48-50 South End, Croydon CRO 1DP

It takes a particularly brave resturateur to open a fish restaurant when others such as Fishworks are heading into receivership, but Malcolm John seems to have a knack for opening popular local bistros in South London. Certainly the first reports suggest he's managed to create a fresh and cheerful offering with Fish and Grill.

Dragon Castle

114 Walworth Road, London SE17 1JL

The Lawn

Fulham Palace, London SW6 6EA
