We may not have as entrenched a burrito culture as you'd find in New York or LA, but the good news is there are still places to hit up in London if a breakfast burrito is the way you want to start your day.
Golden State
Hornsey - 10 Priory Rd, London N8 7RD
If there's one place that could be said to have kicked off London's current obsession with breakfast burritos, it's this California-inspired cafe in North London which opened just over a year ago. There are three burritos on the breakfast menu with bacon, mushrooms or (the most popular) steak at the core. They make the tortillas in house and there are three choices of sauce on offer, hot sauce, chipotle crema or coriander crema.
Rua
Holloway - 303 Holloway Rd, London N7 8HS
An Irish-owned business might not be the first place you'd think of as somewhere to head to for one of the city's top breakfast burrito options, but that would be a mistake. Rua is tucked into one of the railway arches by Holloway Road station and is fast becoming a must-visit weekend brunch spot. Run by Kildare-born Rachel, the coffee offering is exceptional, but what you're really here for are the burritos. They're a weekend-only menu item and include Birria Beef Burrito; adobo-marinated shredded beef with tator tots; a smoky Chipotle Sausage Burrito with tater tots, mini omelette and cheese crisp; and a veggie Black Bean Burrito.
Johnny Boy's
Stoke Newington - 3 Northwold Rd, London N16 7HL
Perhaps the best thing about the breakfast burrito at this new Los Angeles-coded spot in Stokey is that it's an all-day menu item. You pick the protein - bacon, sausage or cheese - and they'll throw in the eggs, tater tots, beans, cheese and salsa. They do also do a breakfast and lunch-only option; Teresa's breakfast burrito features country sausage gravy. Pair either of these with their bottomless filter coffee for a solid morning kickstart.
Archie’s
Highgate and Herne Hill
Both the Highgate Hill original cafe and their newer Herne Hill space do a very creditable breakfast burrito, which is probably helped by owners Emma and James's extensive travels through South America, and chefs on the team from the same part of the world. Here the base burrito is a veggie wrap with folded St Ewe eggs, hash brown, grated cheddar, spinach, guacamole, smoky chipotle salsa and herby sour cream. You can then add chorizo or bacon as an extra. But, if you want to shake things up a bit, they do also have a Full English breakfast burrito on the menu with streaky bacon, sausage, mushrooms and chipotle ketchup for the win.
Coyo Taco
Westminster - 2 Orchard Place, SW1H 0BF
Miami's Coyo Taco has only recently landed in London, but the taqueria much-loved by the likes of Diplo and the Beckhams knows what it's doing on the breakfast front. Get here before 11am if you want to try the breakfast burritos. There's a bacon or a mushroom egg and cheese version with the corn tortillas made each day freshly in-house. One of those and an iced Mexican chocolate would be a decent start to any day.
