Test Driving Aspen & Meursault - a Battersea wine bar that wants you to love natural wine as much as they do

bar aspen batterseaHead here in the evenings for wine and small plates.

What can you tell us about Aspen & Meursault?

This new wine bar is the newest opening from Sunny Hodge, the man behind Diogenes The Dog in Elephant & Castle. But while Diogenes was all about introducing folk to new wines, this Battersea bar is all about demystifying natural wine.

Where exactly is it?

You'll find it in Battersea in a leafy neighbourhood street that's just a short walk from the riverside. They've taken over an old pub that had been closed for a while - turning it into an all-day affair, so there's coffee and pastries by day and then it becomes a wine bar with small plates at night.

Where should we sit?

There's quite a choice, from counter seats up at the window through to large communal tables in the main part of the restaurant. Then there's a smattering of tables through by the kitchen galley and a very chic private dining room towards the back too. There's also a large covered and heated terrace to the side.

What's on the menu?

Think dips, boards and small plates - the perfect food to accompany your wine really. We ordered a mixture to suit both an omnivore and someone who needed a gluten and dairy free options and were really well served. Highlights included a smoked and grilled scamorza for the former and additive free, natural chorizo for the latter.

So what's on the wine list?

If you're bamboozled by what's biodynamic or lost at what low-intervention means, then Sunny and his team want to introduce you to some really lovely and interesting wines, plenty of which are light years away from the farmyard funk you might be concerned about. Highlights for us included their own label Harvest 2 from Montepulciano and a Czech Apple ice wine.

Summing up: The team here are super keen to introduce you to some really interesting wines, so go with an open mind and - to get the best experience - let them take you through their list. All in all, it's a rather lovely new addition to Battersea's bar scene.
