With over two decades of experience in world-class kitchens, honing his craft under chefs like Tom Aikens, Jason Atherton and Joel Robuchon, Kerth Gumbs now heads up the kitchens at the high rise Fenchurch Restaurant at Sky Garden on the 37th floor of the Walkie Talkie. Having grown up in Anguilla, he moved to London in 2004 and represented the city on the Great British Menu. He's agreed to share his favourite places to eat and drink in Mill Hill with us.
Railway Tavern
129 Hale Ln, London NW7 3SB
The Railway Tavern looks like a proper, traditional pub, but it’s never dull. There’s always something going on, whether that’s live music, a DJ set or a few board games coming out once the drinks start flowing. It’s the sort of place you can drop into for one and end up staying far longer than planned. And I’ll admit it: I’ve got a soft spot for a good-value cocktail, and their two-for-£10 deal makes it very easy to say yes.
Joice
45 The Broadway, London NW7 3DA
Joice is my favourite spot on the High Street for a laid-back brunch or afternoon pit-stop. It’s super relaxed - you can grab a coffee, or tuck into a hearty breakfast, but whatever you do, don’t skip the sweet treats. People in the area always rave about the cannoli (they’re a bit of a local talking point), and I’ll happily admit they’re dangerously moreish.
Rising Sun Mill Hill
37 Marsh Ln, Highwood Hill, London NW7 4EY
This place is one of those local gems that always feels like a proper meal out rather than a meal out for the sake of it. It’s a gorgeous old pub, but the brothers running the kitchen have given it a great personality: Italian at its heart, with a few clever twists that keep things interesting. The crowd-pleasing pizzas and pasta dishes make it a go-to for dinners with friends or a weekend treat. It’s buzzy on a Friday or Sunday lunch, and the vibe always feels warm rather than stuffy, the sort of place you’re happy to linger over a glass of wine after the food’s gone.
Numa
8 The Broadway, London NW7 3LL
Numa’s one of my favourite spots to take people. The flavours are bold, the combinations playful without being over the top, and there’s always too much on the menu, you end up ordering more than you planned and trying a bit of everything, which is exactly how it should be.
Bank Food and Drink
73-75 The Broadway, London NW7 3BU
Bank has a moody, modern vibe that immediately feels a bit special. The food always hits the right note, full of flavour, creative without overdoing it — and you absolutely can’t leave without trying their Bank Cheesecake, it’s dangerously good. It feels a bit luxe, which is perfect for special occasions without the stress of impossible reservations or packed tubes.
And a little further away...
King Neptune Fish & Chips
131A Deans Ln, Edgware HA8 9NY
Everyone needs a reliable local chippy, especially when you’re feeding a big family like me. King Neptune makes it easy. It’s great value, the portions are generous, and it’s the kind of place where you can order for everybody without overthinking it. Classic fish and chips done properly, friendly faces behind the counter, and a simple solution to a family dinner that everyone’s happy with.
