22/8/24 - updated with the opening date
When they last opened a new restaurant, The Barbary team just went next door, but for their third opening, they're heading across town to Notting Hill.
Opening on Westbourne Grove (taking over what was Maddox Gallery), the new restaurant comes from Zoë and Layo Paskin, the same team behind The Palomar and the Michelin-starred Evelyn's Table.
As with the original restaurant, they're inspired by the food cooked over fire from "the countries from the Atlantic Coast through to the Mediterranean Sea leading to the Middle East." The full menu is yet to be revealed but we're told it will include house-made merguez, seasonal flatbreads, crispy pork belly skewers, aubergine ajo blanco and fried fish collar. For dessert, there will be fire-baked basbousa and there will also be their amazing hashcake which is a must for any first-time visit to The Barbary.
The Notting Hill Barbary will be much bigger than the counter-only version in Seven Dials. While they will still have a big counter space, keeping the vibe of the original, there's plenty of booth seating ("storm blue Boffi banquettes") for those West Londoners not into counter dining. On top of that, there will also be a separate cocktail bar (with a "crack-glazed volcanic stone bar") so you can expect the cocktail offering to get a bit of an overhaul from the original.
Wine will also be a bigger deal at the Notting Hill Barbary, with 250 bottles on offer and a big reserve selection that we're told will have rare bottles of Krug and Salon as well as first growth Bordeaux from Latour, Petrus, and Y'Quem. Essentially, they're fully banking on this attracting a different crowd from Covent Garden and looking at how well Dorian have done on the wine front, this seems like a good bet.
The Notting Hill dining scene has been going from strength to strength in the past few years and the arrival of The Barbary should be an excellent addition to the area.
