Pastrami lovers are going to be in seventh heaven when a new sandwich shop in Carnaby opens. Mamma Pastrama is the brainchild of chef Jay Morjaria (whose food we loved at JAE) and Vagabond co-founders Stephen Finch and Kieran Sherlock. They say they've taken on the classic American sarnie and given it a reboot.
It's all down to chef Jay's cured meats. He's come up with a secret process combining a blend of proprietary spices and a unique ‘rub’ technique. So while there will be classic pastrami sandwiches available there'll also be some rather different London takes on the NYC dish.
On the menu there'll be:
- Classic Pastrami - cured, spiced, hop-smoked and steamed house pastrami, with their own deli mustard, sauerkraut, rye bread and pickle on the side.
- Big Mamma Melt - smoked chicken, bacon, house pastrami, mustard and pickled onions sandwiched between toasted sourdough.
- Pastrami & Kimchi Toastie - house pastrami, spicy kimchi slaw and a three-cheese mix in toasted sourdough.
- Beet Reuben - spiced and smoked beetroot, sauerkraut, Russian dressing on their own marbled rye.
And if you really want to go all out on the pastrami experience order the Pastrami Popcorn, Smoked Pastrami Sausage with Curry Ketchup or the Mamma’s Poutine with Pastrami Bits and Pastrami Burnt Ends. To go with all that there'll be craft beers from Bethnal Green’s BOXCAR brewery, soft drinks from East London’s Square Root and coffee from Origin Coffee Roasters.
Breakfasts sound like the kind to kickstart the hardest of days with all-day fry up or a corned beef pastrami hash and eggs among other dishes.
You'll find it on Ganton Street, right next door to Pastaio.
