Uncle Roger is opening Kawan, his first London restaurant, in Chinatown

Kawan by Uncle Roger is opening in London's Chinatown

He's the comedian who roasted both Gordon Ramsay and Jamie Oliver for their ramen and egg fried rice dishes, respectively. Now Nigel Ng, who's better known by his comedy alter ego Uncle Roger, is preparing to put his money where his mouth is. This spring, he's opening his first UK restaurant in London.

Kawan by Uncle Roger is going to be a team effort between Nigel, restaurateur Keng Yew (who's behind London openings like YiQi and The Eight) and chef Daren Liew (Duddell's and the Hakkasan Group).

Given that Uncle Roger rose to fame off the back of critiqueing other people's fried rice recipes, you can bet that there will be a fried rice dish on Kawan's menu. But as Nigel says, "with a partnership with Chef Daren Liew, there's going to be so much more than that - can’t wait to show you what we've been working on!" The team are describing it as a range of Asian and family-style dishes "reinterpreted through a modern British lens."

So you'll find a Hainanese chicken chop and Sarawak pepper belly delight on there alongside a Kawan take on fish & chips and a crispy puff chicken Wellington.

It's not the first restaurant the comedian with over 10m followers on YouTube has launched. Ng has six branches of his fried-rice-focused FUIYOH! It’s Uncle Roger in Malaysia. But with millions of followers on YouTube and TikTok you can expect this first London opening to be completely mobbed when they fling open the doors.
