Thai restaurant Burning Rose in Balham has an ex-Nahm chef behind the food

Thai restaurant Burning Rose in Balham has an ex-Nahm chef in the kitchen

What: Burning Rose

In a nutshell: Fine Thai dining in Balham

Summing it all up: Residents of Balham in London’s southwest have been enjoying a decent local Thai delivery and take-away service from Burning Rose for a while now. However, in the past month, it has expanded into a dine-in restaurant with Matthew Albert, of Nahm fame, in charge of the kitchen.

The low-down

The good people of Balham in London’s southwest were thrilled when Burning Rose, a popular Thai delivery/takeaway place, expanded into a dine-in restaurant in June. Given the clout of the restaurant’s backers (Australian entrepreneur Dennis Turner, who previously co-founded restaurant group Aylmer Aaharn with renowned chef David Thompson, formerly of World's 50 Best restaurant Nahm in Bangkok), it’s time the rest of you knew.

They've brought in former Nahm executive chef Matthew Albert who's come up with the menu here. While Balham locals may have felt they were getting Michelin-quality home deliveries and take-aways, the restaurant focus is on a more casual experience. So don’t expect prices to climb extortionately if you choose to eat-in rather than take-away.

Here’s a little taste of what’s on offer:

  • Chiang Mai Noodles & Chicken: a signature dish of handmade chicken curry noodle soup with crispy egg noodles, pickled mustard greens, egg, fresh shallots and coriander
  • Royal Massaman Beef Curry: Southern Thai curry with slow-braised beef, sweet potato and golden shallots in a handmade cassia, Thai cardamom and coconut cream sauce
  • Southern Sea Bass Curry: sea bass fillets poached in a handmade fresh yellow curry sauce with green papaya and morning glory
  • Classic Prawn Pad Thai: King prawns stir-fried with rice noodles, tofu, egg, beansprouts and garlic chives in a caramelised tamarind and palm sugar sauce, then topped with crushed peanuts
