A Hot Dinners exclusive
Pretty much perfectly timed for a week in which we're all waiting for the hammer of lockdown to drop, comes news from Big Mamma. The team who opened the big-hitting OTT restaurants Gloria and Circolo Popolare are launching their first delivery-only restaurant.
Napoli Gang starts delivering this Wednesday, kicking off from a kitchen in Shoreditch. Kentish Town comes on board next week and they're rolling it out across London to most of zones 1 and 2 in the coming weeks.
The all-new menu features a range of pizzas along with what they're describing as "super sexy antipasti and dolci". If you're feeding a few of you at home The Gang Aperitivo sounds just the ticket with a selection of those antipasti including mortadella al pistacchio, salame de tartufo, candied tomatoes and foccacia. And, personally, we'd like to work our way through the fritti section - which includes fried crocchette with a bechamel heart served with Calabrian nduja as well as truffle arancini.
As for the pizzas - here's a taster of what's on offer:
- Truffle Squad - Mozzarella fior di latte with fresh ricotta di bufala, black truffle cream, fresh seasonal truffle and button mushrooms sauteed with Sicilian thyme.
- E Burratajovski - San Marzano tomato sauce, taggiasche olives, capers, fresh basil pesto and a smoky heart of burrata on top.
- Hot Damn - Mozzarella fior di latte with confit peppers, aubergines, courgettes, taggiasche olives and vegan pesto.
There's also a few of the group's existing hits - so if you badly want their lasagne or their towering lemon meringue pie (pictured above), that's on offer too. We were pretty impressed with the latter on a recent delivery Test Drive of Gloria.
When we read something like a restaurant's mission "is to change people’s lives with pizza" our first reaction is to eye roll. But to be fair to them, Napoli Gang isn't just talking the talk. They've partnered with London charity, Street Leagues, who support unemployed youths into work. To that end, they'll be offering job opportunities and donating to the charity's existing programmes. And - in a nice touch - 1% of the profits will go directly to the Ubereats delivery drivers who deliver the food to your door.
All in all, if we do have to stay home more, at least our delivery options just got a lot more interesting.
