Updated 23/1/19 with opening date and soft launch offer
What: Anglina
In a nutshell: This Dalston restaurant and cocktail bar is a Japanese/Italian mashup
Summing it all up: Expect to see a modern take on Japanese and Italian food in this new Dalston restaurant which also sports a tiny Tokyo-style cocktail bar.
The low-down
If you're torn between picking a favourite when it comes to Italian or Japanese food, then a new restaurant and cocktail bar in Dalston has resolved that issue for you. Angelina describes its offering as "a surreal exploration of Japanese and Italian cuisines, cultures and influences". In practice that means their menu and drinks offering is a modern take on both.
The restaurant's owner Joshua Owens-Baigler trained at the River Café before becoming General Manager of Artusi and more recently at Zest at JW3 and Bevis Marks synagogue in the City. It was Bevis Marks that he worked with chef Robin Beparry who's joined in the kitchen here by Daniele Ceforo who arrives here via Bocca di Lupo, Café Murano and Enoteca Turi and was most recently Head Chef at Zoilo.
The tasting menu will change daily and cost £48 with the option of Italian wine pairing for £45, featuring eight sharing plates such as:
- Unagi 2 Risotto with Burnt Soy Butter & Dashi
- Cavolo Nero, Tonkotsu 4
- Egg & Keta Caviar
- Black Sesame and Milk Chocolate Pannacotta.
But if you want to just grab a dish and a drink they'll be putting on a a Chef’s Choice Daily Plate every day for £9 or £12 with wine.
In addition the food, the space also sports a diminutive Tokyo-style bar. Golden Gai will seat just six people - but if you're looking for shots of it on Insta you'll be left wanting. They're asking folks to leave their phones at the door. It's not quite East London's smallest bar (that falls to The Brig in Bow) but it's pretty darned close.
