The Jellied Eel brings cocktail and croquetas to Walthamstow

Two Walthamstow locals, Paul Jellis and Charlie Westover are behind this winter pop-up focused entirely on cocktails and deep-fried croquetas.

Having sat on the judging panel for London’s annual Croquetas Challenge for the past couple of years, we’ve been lucky enough to eat some incredible creations. It’s a safe bet then that anything involving deep fried golden croquetas has immediately got our attention, so we’re pretty excited about The Jellied Eel.

Promising to be the UK’s ‘first cocktail and croquetas bar’, The Jellied Eel pop-up will be set in Grade II listed pie and mash shop L Manze in Walthamstow, which has stood since 1929 and features some incredible art deco interiors.

The authentic Spanish croquetas (which are differentiated from croquettes through the use of infused béchamel sauce instead of potato) are individually handmade by Javier Garcia and Juan Piñas especially for The Jellied Eel, and varieties will include the classic Jamón Ibérico, made with ham from Javier’s own family in Spain; British Spinach and Wild Garlic; and, in a nod to the building’s past, Smoked Eel and Horseradish.

On the cocktail front, there’s winter-themed drinks including the Mulled Wine New York Sour and a Clementine Gimlet, with twists on classics including a filthy Martini for two, served with a stick of olives to share.

All sounds pretty good to us. The only downside is that the pop-up will only be running on Friday and Saturday nights from November 10th up until Christmas, but here’s hoping it might become a permanent fixture. Manze’s will continue to operate its usual business hours for all your pie and mash needs.
