What: Lahpet

In a nutshell: Bethnal Green spotlight on Burmese food

Summing it all up: From their simple start on a Maltby Street stall to their new permanent digs on Bethnal Green Road, Lahpet are hoping to introduce Londoners to the delights of Burmese food.

The low-down

If you like Burmese food, then it looks like the place you need to get yourself to Pronto is Lahpet. The popular pop up has just opened a permanent spot on Bethnal Green Road and it's going down a storm.

Founders Dan Anton, whose Burmese dad's cooking plugged him into how 'delicious and delicate the food is" and Head Chef Zaw Mahesh who was born and raised there - and previously worked at Corinthia Hotel, Daylesford Organic and Milos - want to introduce Londoners to the delights of Burmese cooking.

To that end, they're using the best Burmese and British produce available, supplementing what's seasonal with ingredients that Zaw imports from Myanmar monthly.

The restaurant's signature dish is their Tea Leaf Salad, which incorporates pickled tea leaves. "The best thing ever. Order it." said Burmese food writer MiMi Aye on Instagram.

Look out too for their home-made Shan tofu: made from scratch on site using split peas.

Other dishes include:

  • Mixed Fritters: Mandalay (kidney bean & ginger)/Sweetcorn/Bottle Gourd/Shan Tofu
  • Lamb & Lahpet (slow-cooked pulled lamb, pickled tea leaves, beans, baby carrots)
  • Hake Masala (Burmese masala, lemongrass rosti, spring onion, lime)
  • Tofu Nway (Shan tofu soup, pea shoots, rice noodles, sweet soya)

The 76 seater restaurant mixes up booth seating with a long wooden sharing table and there's a big bar where you can enjoy drinks like the Lahpet Sour (gin with campari, orange, Earl Grey and strawberry jam) or a Jaggery Old Fashioned.
