Canadian chef Khanh Tran-Thanh leads the kitchen at Dalston’s Angelina restaurant as Head Chef. The partnership between Khanh and Angelina began during the 2020 lockdown while working with charity Made in Hackney to cook and deliver meals to vulnerable people. Khanh went on to join Angelina as Sous Chef, a role she held for four years before stepping into the role of Head Chef in 2025. As a London Fields local, she's agreed to share her favourite food and drink places close to home.
Koya-ko
10 Broadway Market Mews, London E8 4TS
For when only a hot bowl of udon noodles will do. Small but beautiful menu. Love sitting at the high seats, peer out the window and people watch. The karaage is always perfection, the house pickles are on point and the barley tea is healing. Love the guest chef specials they have on too.
The Prince Arthur
95 Forest Rd, London E8 3BH
My favourite time to visit is after a day shift. I stop on my walk home and sit with a solo pint to decompress. This pub ticks all the boxes of a good local — friendly staff, good pints, outside seating, friendly locals and doggies, no rugs, no TV, decent food, not too chic, not too shabby, just right.
E5 Bakehouse
96 Mentmore Terrace, London E8 3PH
I have been visiting the bakery since it was a small startup in one of the railway arches. Now it has expanded over two arches and it is always mega busy. Yet, despite being a bigger business with bigger ambitions, its original soul remains. To me, E5 really embodies that community vibe.
Vietnam Mini Market
193A Mare St, London E8 3QE
I am so grateful to have this Vietnamese supermarket on my doorstep. I can get fresh Bánh cuốn (rice rolls, my favourite Vietnamese street food).
And a little further away....
Bánh Mì Hội-An
242 Graham Rd, London E8 1BP
Little hole-in-the-wall place on busy Graham road. Open for literally 2-3 hours a day for lunch. They don’t skimp on the filling, the bread is light, soft yet crunchy, and garnishes are fresh. The couple that runs the place are genuinely the nicest.
