South Woodford locals are in line to get a hot new bakery that Londoners are going to want to cross town for. Baker Zakiyah Syeda has been growing her reputation ever since the days post-lockdown when she started her micro bakery, doing local deliveries.
A Cordon Bleu-trained chef, she's worked at Mamasons, Little Bread Pedlar and as a pastry chef for Cedric Grolet at The Berkeley. Most recently, she was head baker at the highly rated Farha in Leyton, and she also sells her chocolate bars on Delli. It's not a huge surprise that a standalone bakery was always on the cards, and now it looks as though that dream is in play.
The site has been found; it's in a new development on George Lane, and now she just needs the final push to get it over the line. Launching a crowdfunder this week, Zakiyah said: "We want to create the kind of neighbourhood bakery you can pop into for your morning coffee, pick up your favourite pastry, get your daily bread, discover something new, or spend a little longer catching up with friends. Somewhere that feels welcoming, has really good specialty coffee, freshly baked sourdough, and pastries that give you a reason to come back.
We have so many ideas we can’t wait to bring to life, from late-night openings and monthly dessert bars to little events that bring people together. We want Zakiyah’s to be more than just a bakery; we want it to become a part of the neighbourhood."
There's already a lot of buzz building for this opening. We'll keep you posted as we learn more.
