We only recently wrote about Dishoom lining up another opening on the South Bank before its latest in London Bridge had even opened the doors, and now it looks like Din Tai Fung are pulling off a similar trick. They're looking to open in King's Cross, but it seems they already have plans to open in Soho too.
Taking King's Cross first, they're opening in the space that used to be Babel Beerhouse, a big corner site that's right opposite The Lightroom.
They're best known for their xiao long bao soup dumplings, which are prepared in a small kitchen in front of all the diners, all to emphasise how freshly made they are (and also so you can marvel at how quickly the chefs make them). Those dumplings are available with crab, pork, chicken, beef and more. Alongside the dumplings, there's a sizeable menu of Chinese dishes, ranging from Shanghainese drunken chicken through to noodles and rice dishes. The salted egg yolk custard lava buns are a must too.
And alongside King's Cross, hospitality newsletter Propel reports that they're also looking at a corner space in Soho at the junction of Carnaby Street and Broadwick. That's more home territory for them, given that they already have restaurants at Selfridges and Centre Point. That opening seems to be a little further away, though.
Neither of the restaurants has been officially announced, so it looks like it'll be into 2027 before we see either of them. We'll keep you updated as we learn more.
