We're still waiting for London to hit its peak pizza moment, but in the meantime, we have a new independent pizzeria on the way to Bermondsey. This one sees the man behind Luna and Legare (Jay Patel) teaming up with the man behind Watchhouse (Roland Home), who have brought in an ex-Dusty Knuckle/Spring chef (Jack Ellingham). Together, they're opening Five Feet Pizza.
Starting with the pizza dough itself, they say that what differentiates them is their 1cm thick "aerated, fluffy dough", baked in black iron pans for a crispy edge. So, while not quite deep-pan, it's definitely in that area. And as for the toppings, they're focusing on local and British (the meat comes from Bermondsey Butcher, for example). All that gets you pizzas which include:
- Hot Sausage Pie - Vodka Sauce, Fennel Sausage, Pecorino, Ricotta, House Pickled Chillies, Calabrian Chilli Honey
- Pepperoni Pie - Tomato Sauce, For Di Latte, Pecorino, Pepperoni, Parmesan
- White Potato Pie - White Sauce, Potatoes, Green Onions, Caramelised Onions, Fior Di Latte, Scamorza, Aged Cheddar
There will also be dips for the crusts, chicken wings and Polenta Fritta served with vodka sauce & scamorza cheese.
Opening just off Bermondsey Street itself on an old bakery site (it looks like there hasn't been a restaurant there before), it's going to be designed by the same people as Watchhouse, so there may be a more modern approach to the design than we've seen in pizzerias of late.
So if you're getting the itch to try something new on the pizza scene, this is one to keep an eye on.
