Until recently, the Old Nun's Head in Nunhead was home to one of London's best pizzerias, Dough Hands. They've now moved on, but Nunhead pizza fans now have something completely new to look forward to.
Taking on the residency in the pub is Slice Circle. That's a duo comprising Angus Whitfield, previously at Dough Hands, and Methun Chelvan, previously at Bad Boy Pizza Society. So they've got some very strong pizza know-how between them. As for their signature pizza style, they say it "offers a super thin, light, crispy bite, with a juicy crust designed for dunking. We want to capture that famous NYC crunch mouthfeel: sturdy and satisfying with that classic no-flop bake."
The pair specifically take their inspiration from key New York pizzerias, including the old guard like Luigi’s, Arturo’s and John’s of Bleecker and newer hits like Chrissy’s, Cello’s and L’Industrie.
As for what's on offer, there will be just five pizzas on the menu to start with:
- Red Pie - San Marzano, oregano, confit garlic, house breadcrumbs
- Cheese Pie - Fior di latte, San Marzano, provolone, British hard cheese, basil
- Pep Pie - San Marzano, fior di latte, pepperoni, oregano, pecorino
- Nun Pie - San Marzano, fior di latte, soppressata, whipped ricotta, hot honey, pecorino
- Tamil Pie - Masala vodka sauce, fior di latte, red onion, lemon yoghurt, coriander
That last pizza takes its inspiration from Methun’s home country of India, and "masala vodka sauce" is actually his mum's secret recipe. And on top of the above, also look out for regular specials and collabs in the near future.
