They're big in the Netherlands and Belgium, where they hoover up the tourist crowds looking for particularly extra punnets of chips, and now Frites Atelier have come to London, landing in Soho (taking over from Balans no. 34). People do seem to enjoy queuing for food in Soho, so expect this to be the big new viral hit in the run-up to Christmas. They have had Eating With Tod in already, after all...
It was originally started by Michelin-starred chef Sergio Herman almost 10 years ago, but (so far) they've expanded only slowly and this is their fourth main opening, following Antwerp, Brussels and Ghent. As for what to expect, it's all about a punnet of their fries covered in one of six special toppings. Those range from the simple Parmesan and basil to the more intricate Flemish beef stew and spicy rendang. Plus there are lots of sauces to choose from, with truffle being a big hit.
Their other places have offered extras like croquettes, but it's still TBD if those are coming to London. There is a drinks list though ranging from beer and wine to espresso martinis and spicy margs.
And... that's it! The fries should be good, by all accounts, so if you're passing by and the queue isn't horrendous, it should at least be worth trying out - although do note that the fries with sauce come in at £8,95 and the loaded ones are £14.50. But these are gourmet fries, don't you know?
