Akira Back and the Mandarin Oriental Mayfair have gone their separate ways

These are testing times for big name chefs. Following in the wake of so many being let go from their prestigious dining spots at Harrods comes another top-level departure. This time it's Michelin-starred chef Akira Back, whose partnership with the Mandarin Oriental Mayfair has ended after just over a year.

In a statement issued by the hotel, the chef's main restaurant there is being renamed (creatively) The Restaurant at Mandarin Oriental Mayfair. More importantly, Back's chef's table restaurant Dosa - for which he picked up a Michelin star in March - has been renamed Somssi by Jihun Kim.  "Somssi by Jihun Kim (formally Dosa by Akira Back) will continue to operate with the same culinary philosophy," the hotel's statement explained, "under a refreshed name and menu led by Chef Jihun Kim and his talented team." Luckily for the hotel, the star is attached to the restaurant and not the chef, so for the time being, it'll remain Michelin-starred.

There's no real explanation as to why the hotel has severed ties with Back, but the fact that so soon after launching at the Mandarin he subsequently opened another London restaurant less than a mile away at another London hotel, the Montcalm Mayfair, this summer wouldn't have been a popular move with the Mandarin Oriental group.
