They've been here before in the guise of a pop-up at Carousel, but now Punk Royale is coming to London for their first permanent restaurant outside of Scandinavia.
The restaurant is taking a space in Mayfair that recently held two restaurants - Amethyst and London Stock. Neither of those survived long, so it's a tricky site but perhaps one that a high-concept place like Punk Royale can make the most of.
As to what that concept is, the whole Punk part of the name comes into play. When launched in Stockholm, they referred to it as a "brutal bistro" in one of those rooms that feels slightly thrown-together but has actually had quite a lot of thought put into it. From what we can see online, it seems like mixing fine-dining food with MEATliquor aesthetics and a party vibe. Or, as they put it, an "immersive and no-bullshit take on modern fine dining" which they also say is part performance/part dinner party.
They originally banned phones in their restaurants, but we're not entirely sure if that's still the case or if many people online are just blatantly ignoring those rules.
On to the menu, they bill things as something that "blends Nordic technique with London attitude". One of their signatures is the caviar bump, caviar licked off your hand with a shot of vodka, and edible licking paper is also apparently a thing. The recent Carousel pop-up reveals more, with dishes including a chawanmushi tart, green curry oyster, foie gras au torchon and langoustine nigiri, so it takes its inspiration from all over the place.
It certainly sounds a bit mad (some reviewers will have a field day with this), but we've been hearing some very good things about the cooking and the previous pop-up went down very well. So here's hoping they can finally make this space work.
