The mayor of London, Sadiq Khan, is getting in on the good weather. The first of four new areas which have been handpicked to enjoy the 'summer streets' alfresco treatment this year launched at the weekend. Shoreditch was the first area to come online, with both Redchurch Street and Rivington Street closed to traffic in the evenings on Friday and Saturday. That means that Londoners will be able to dine and drink outdoors, taking over the streets.
Next weekend is Brixton's turn when businesses in both Atlantic Road and Brixton Station Road will get the car-free treatment. They're building a "new, open-access seating area for all" as part of the plan.
Following those two schemes, St Martin's Lane in central London will go car-free later in August. And Leyton's Francis Road and Midland Roads are getting in on the act with car-free activity planned across the summer months.
"I'm determined to do all I can to support London’s nightlife," tweeted the mayor at the weekend.
