Updated 21/8/24 with opening date and pub name

Having had his plans to run a restaurant at his farm scuppered by local planning restrictions, presenter Jeremy Clarkson has responded by buying a pub instead. Announcing the news in his weekly column for the Sunday Times Clarkson said he's just bought The Windmill - a pub/wedding venue just outside the picture-postcard town of Burford.

The deal, which he says cost under £1 million means he'll be able to sell his own beer along with a menu that adheres strictly to British produce, "somewhere where I could sell all that we make here. And my own beer in the taps too...a restaurant where absolutely everything had been grown or reared in Britain. Even the salt, pepper and wine. I had even decided there’d be no coffee or Coca-Cola."

Waxing lyrical he goes on to say: "In the corner there will be a table with my name on it. A place where I can go on a Sunday with my granddaughter for some gammon, egg and chips. Well-priced, British-grown food with a pint of Hawkstone beer (that's the beer he makes). And a warm fuzzy feeling inside."

As for the food, it doesn't look set to rock the boat with standard pub fare like sausages with mash and onion gravy, Lancashire hotpot and gammon steak with bubble and squeak on the menu. They'll also be serving sausage rolls and pickled eggs up at the bar.

He has renamed the pub The Farmer's Dog (having ignored suggestions from followers to call it either Top Beer or The Grand Pour).
