3/7/24 - updated with the opening date
Having expanded from Shoreditch to Covent Garden, now Burmese restaurant Lahpet is heading south of the river for its next opening, Lahpet Larder.
The third Lahpet will be in Bermondsey, taking over the space that was most recently The Hide bar. The name for this opening comes from Bermondsey's history as being "London's larder", but also because they'll be offering some Burmese staples and pickles that you can buy and take home for your own cooking.
As for the restaurant itself, the menu will highlight ingredients imported from Myanmar. It'll focus on regional Burmese cooking styles, with sharing plates and bowls including:
- Pork with pon yay gyi (fermented horsegram beans)
- Rakhine salmon & papaya salad
- Dawei Mohinga, a regional version of the classic Burmese fish noodle soup.
Desserts sound rather lovely with rice flan with coconut jam as well as Burmese milk tea ice cream promised. The drinks will also feature Burmese flavours, and we're most intrigued by the pickled tea oil martini.
The restaurant should fit in around 90 people and there will be a central open kitchen at the heart of it. It will also have a private dining room.
Both of Lahpet's openings so far have been excellent, so we have high hopes for this one too.
