The current business climate for restaurants in London is brutal. And we're particularly sad to be reporting on the demise of one of the city's longer-standing restaurants, Club Gascon.
In an email sent to regulars last night, the restaurant's owners, Chef Pascal Aussignac and Vincent Labeyrie, said that it was "With both gratitude and a heavy heart, we share that Club Gascon will be closing its doors following dinner service on 28 March.
"From the very beginning, our approach to dining was driven by passion and creativity - offering guests the freedom to explore three to five dishes across our menu, in no set order, long before “small plates” became part of everyday dining language. It was a sharing-led experience designed to showcase the very best of Gascony’s rich culinary heritage."
The restaurant, which has held a Michelin star since 2002, was part of the early vanguard of establishments transforming Smithfield into a culinary destination, along with St John and the likes of Stephen Bull Bistro. It spawned a sibling restaurant, Comptoir Gascon, and bar Cellar Gascon and became known for its dishes featuring first foie gras and then, as a sign of the times, also faux gras.
If you haven't been before, or in a while, there is still time. The restaurant's last service will be on 28 March.
