StreetSmart donates £696,000 to homeless charities from restaurant bills

Dining out in London, we feel pretty sure that you would have come across StreetSmart at some point - it's the charity that helps to raise funds for the homeless. They partner with another charity LandAid, the property industry charity working to end youth homelessness in the UK.

You'll most likely have seen that some restaurants have been asking customers to donate £1 from their bookings to the charity and it looks like they've had a pretty great result in 2021. Celebrating with a party at Sessions Arts Club this week, they announced that they raised a total of £696,000 from diners at 512 restaurants last year. Bearing in mind that restaurants were actually closed for three months or more, that's a pretty amazing total.

The 2021 total includes Soho House which alone raised £69,000 and MEATliquor who donated £29,000. The charity has raised a massive £11 million since it launched in 1998.

At the party, former Evening Standard critic Fay Maschler (pictured) won an award for her support of the charity over the years.

So next time you see the request to add that £1 to your bill, know that it can make a huge difference.
