We're hearing strong rumours that changes are afoot at Claridge's. A reader (who's also in the industry) got in touch to tell us that Fera is expected to close at the end of the year. And what or rather who is being tipped to replace it is what's got us all excited.
The rumour mill currently has as the front-runner Daniel Humm, who's the chef behind New York restaurants Eleven Madison Park and NoMad. EMP is currently number four (and a previous number 1) on the World's 50 Best Restaurants list.
We already know Humm's a big fan of Claridge's - earlier this year he told 1843 magazine that "One of the most special places for me to go for tea is Claridge’s in London. I would have the sandwich selection and the scones with clotted cream." And he's also on record telling The Telegraph; "I love London and the sense of British hospitality you feel at places such as at Claridge's."
The last time the chef Instagrammed from London was at the end of August, when he visited Core by Clare Smyth but our inside mole says he's recently stayed at the hotel and had meetings with managers. Six months ago he also teamed up with the folk at Bubbledogs, creating his own gourmet hot dog for Londoners.
And, of course, Humm's name was also in the ring last time around before Fera was confirmed. The then General Manager Thomas Kochs (you'll probably recall him from the fabulous TV documentary) told trade title The Caterer that he was certainly in the mix. "It would have to be a chef and a restaurant that was completely new to London – someone like Daniel Humm at Eleven Madison Park in New York – but we are looking at many others."
Unfortunately, we couldn't get any confirmation on this story from the hotel itself. So if we turn out to be right, you heard it here first and if we're wrong, then forget we said anything.
