Fat Phil's brings American-inspired comfort food to Camberwell

What: Fat Phil's

In a nutshell: Classically trained chef opens comfort food spot in Camberwell

Summing it all up: He trained under Roux, Blanc and Pierre-White, now chef Phil Cooper has opened a simpler kind of place on Camberwell Church Street.

The low-down

New to Camberwell Church Street is Fat Phil's. They're billing what they do as "simple well -cooked food which massages the soul". In practice that means a menu that darts all over the place, with some American influences. So expect small plates like Burford Brown egg and Cromer crab or Steak Tartare with Kentucky Rye followed by classic cheeseburgers, buttermilk chicken burgers and flat iron steaks but also couscous-stuffed aubergine or a grilled Bagot goat chop.

In the kitchen is Phil Cooper who trained with Michel Roux at the Waterside Inn, worked with Raymond Blanc at Le Manoir Aux Quatre Saisons and then with Marco Pierre-White as Executive Chef at the Mirabelle.
