Here's why everyone is going to want to go to hot new City pub The Albatross pub

The Albatross pub opening on Old Jewry in the City

For a while now we've known that the Wild Group have been planning a pub in the City. But they're only now ready to reveal the details. If you know where Wild Izakaya is on Old Jewry, they've taken over the former Browns site. And we haven't been this excited about a new pub opening in London since The Devonshire. Why? Well, once you know who's behind it, you'll get the gist.

First up is the restaurant group's back catalogue. George Bukhov-Weinstein and Ilya Demichev are behind places like Goodman, Beast, Pinna and - just across the road - Wild Izakaya. So they know how to open somewhere everyone wants to eat. Next they've picked a really good landlord (and we know from Osh at The Dev how important that is). Here it's Chris Dunlop, who previously ran The Spotted Pig in New York along with landlady Alice Tayler, who's spent a decade working with Tom Kerridge.

Of course you can't be a great London pub without a standout beer offering. At The Albatross it's been curated by Shane McHugh, Head of Beverage across Goodman restaurants. He's partnered with East London's Pillars Brewery and is promising 15 beers on tap, none of which are "the usual suspects". Critically it will be good value with pints of Pilsner or Guinness at £6.

"I bloody love pubs," says Crispin Sugden, their head of Ops. "When we asked ourselves what was missing in the City Pub scene, it kept coming back to the same thing - somewhere British-led, with proper food, a different selection of draft that wasn’t found on every font, great cocktails, wine and a bit of fun."

The food isn't an afterthought though. Head Chef Chris Piorkowski is behind a menu focusing on British seafood. Think lobster thermidor, seafood bisque, oyster platters and a choice of native lobsters from the south coast or Norwegian king crab straight from the tanks.

It's a massive space, set across two floors, with a private dining room and room, we're told, for 400 thirsty City workers.
