Following the closure of their two Covent Garden restaurants, we've been wondering what the Petersham Nurseries team were going to do next. Now we have our answer, of sorts. The baton has moved to the family's next generation of restaurateurs who are about to open a Florence-inspired trattoria and bar called Trogolo on Westbourne Grove.
The trattoria takes over the site where The Good Plot was and is going to be the kind of place you can pop in for a plate of pasta and wine, or stay on for a longer lunch or more leisurely dinner. Owner Lara Boglione, the daughter of Petersham founders Gael and Francesco, and her husband Giovanni Mazzei who's behind winery Marchesi Mazzei, have quite the vision for their Notting Hill restaurant. Think long tables and communal dining (although they will also have marble-topped tables for two). Given the aesthetic of Petersham, you can probably expect this new West London spot to be quite the looker too.
As for the food, that's going to have a strong focus on producers, both British and Italian. There'll be snacks of sage leaves fritto or pecorino with pears, then tagliolini with white truffle, pollo al burro, puntarella and anchovy salads and apple cakes and cantucci biscuits with vin santo to finish.
Having a winemaker as a co-owner means the wine focus will have a strong Tuscan bent. There'll be 350 bottles on the list, and he says they're aiming "to make our wine list the definitive reference point for Italian and, specifically, Tuscan wines in London". But it's not just about wine, as the downstairs bar will also serve up cocktails and crostini.
