Ever since he finished at Launceston Place, we've been wondering where chef Ben Murphy was going to turn up next. Now he's made his decision, opening the new 74 Charlotte Street restaurant, which takes over the space from Monica Galetti's Mere.
We don't know too much about the menu yet, but Murphy has been known for adapting old favourites and that continues here with a beef wellington served with braised beefy chips, anchovy and timur pepper. That's all we know about the main menu, but dessert will bring a fig leaf soufflé with olive oil ice cream and, more importantly, an ice cream trolley. The chef tends towards a more fine-dining approach with a light touch, so expect the same here.
As for the restaurant itself, expect a big revamp to the lower-ground space from its Mere days, where they've gone for a much lighter feel throughout. As before, there's a separate bar down here too for cocktails and they're promising a wine list with 300 bottles available. It all comes from WSH Restaurants, who until now have concentrated on restaurants outside of town, including The Woodspeen and The Braywood.
We'll bring you lots more info about the food closer to the opening.
